Haiti Earthquake - UK Council Response PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 18 January 2010 16:50

Following the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti last week, local authorities are already involved in the disaster response activities through the mobilisation of emergency recovery teams coordinated by the Department for International Development.

64 search & rescue experts from fire services around the UK have been dispatched to Haiti, including volunteers from fire and rescue services in Greater Manchester, Lancashire, West Sussex, Kent, the West Midlands, Lincolnshire, Hampshire and mid and west Wales.

In addition many councils have enquired how money raised in their local area through appeals and collections can be channelled to Haiti. We advise that donations are made to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). The DEC is the umbrella body for 13 of the largest UK based humanitarian organisations (including the British Red Cross, Oxfam and Save the Children).

We are currently exploring longer term support for Haiti and the potential for UK local councils to work in partnership with other UK, European and international partners over future months & years. For councils who are keen to assist in any other capacity, please contact us.
